The European Parliament has just adopted a Regulation on Food Information for consumers.

Opening the way to Croatia's membership

"This European Council will be remembered as the meeting which paved the way for Croatia's membership of the European Union. It is a milestone for Croatia and for the Western Balkans as a whole", said President Herman Van Rompuy after the European Council meeting on 24 June. Negotiations with Croatia on its becoming the 28th member state of the EU should be concluded by the end of June 2011.

Investing today for growth tomorrow

A step further towards the unitary patent

The unitary patent came closer to realisation on 27 June, when the Competitiveness Council agreed on two proposals on the creation of an EU-wide patent title and its language regime.

Secretary-General handover

Uwe Corsepius took over from Pierre de Boissieu as the Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union on 26 June 2011. He is the new head of the General Secretariat of the Council, which assists both the European Council (heads of state and government) and the Council (ministers).<--break->

Eurobarometer: Europeans generally satisfied with train services but want more access to information when travelling

Brussels, 15 June 2011 - A Eurobarometer survey was conducted to examine EU rail passengers’ satisfaction with domestic rail services, including trains themselves, railway stations and the rail network in their country. The Eurobarometer identified on the one hand good points for rail passengers who generally feel safe when travelling by rail or find it easy to purchase their tickets, and on the other hand shortcomings such as lack of information regarding passenger rights or delays.

Commission signs Memorandum of Cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organisation

European Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas has signed today, together with the Hungarian State Secretary for Infrastructure Pál Völner, a Memorandum of Cooperation providing a framework for enhanced cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The Memorandum provides the basis for stronger EU involvement with ICAO.

European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT): Commission consults on future strategy

The European Commission today launches a public consultation on the future strategy of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) following the success of its initial phase. The consultation will feed into a 'strategic innovation agenda' for the EIT which the Commission is due to propose by the end of this year.
