First World War centenary commemoration


EU leaders decided on their candidate for President of the European Commission. They also discussed a strategic agenda for the EU and the peace plan proposal in Ukraine. They also congratulated Greece for the main achievements of their presidency.

Juncker chosen by the European Council for EU top job

The European Council adopted the decision proposing to the European Parliament Jean Claude Juncker as President of the European Commission after a formal vote by qualified majority.

Strategic agenda for the Union in times of change

EU leaders agreed on a strategic agenda on the future of the EU, its priorities and purpose in the years to come.


EU leaders welcomed President Poroshenko's peace plan. But the European Council regrets that the cease-fire has not led to the full cessation of military hostilities

Regarding sanctions, the European Council is committed to reconvene at any time to adopt further significant restrictive measures if a detailed list of concrete steps are not taken by Monday 30 June.

European Semester

The European Council endorsed the country-specific recommendations thus concluding the 2014 European Semester. It called for additional efforts to strengthen Europe's capacity to grow and create more jobs

Strategic guidelines within the area of freedom, security  and justice

The European Council defined the strategic guidelines for legislative and operational planning for the coming years within the area of freedom, security  and justice.

Climate and energy

The European Council took stock of progress made towards a final decision in October on the 2030 climate and energy policy framework.

Signing ceremony of the Association Agreements with Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine


EU leaders signed  the Association Agreements with Georgia and with the Republic of Moldova. The signature process with Ukraine was completed, in the presence of M. Poroshenko, President of Ukraine. Each of these agreements include Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. This is a recognition of the significant progress made over recent years by these countries and of their strong political determination to come closer to the European Union.

Ypres Ceremony


EU leaders attended a ceremony in the Belgium city of Ypres to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I. They are gathering at the Menin Gate; a memorial on the main road along which the soldiers headed to battle. To mark the occasion, the European Union donated a symbolic "peace bench".  Over dinner, they had an exchange of views on the strategic agenda for the European Union in the years to come.
